1) How do I get a hemp license in Tennessee?

You can apply for a hemp grower’s license at any time. The application can be found here. A complete application and license fee are required before a license can be issued.

2) Do I need to have my soil tested before I grow hemp?

TDA does not require any testing to the soil before obtaining a license. The person purchasing your hemp may require soil tests for pesticide residues or heavy metals. Nutrient soil tests are can be sent to UT extension for testing while heavy metals and pesticide tests require a private lab. You can use the internet to find a lab for those tests or ask a processor.

3) What is the hemp growing inspection process like?

Every crop grown and every variety may be inspected by a TDA plant inspector prior to harvest. The grower should contact TDA 30 days prior to harvest for a possible inspection at no cost and HATS if a sample is required. The license holder is responsible for paying all fees associated with the sampling.  Samples are conducted by collecting cuttings from a statistically representative number of plants.   www.hemptesthats.com

4) Is there current news regarding hemp and Tennessee?

FSA has announced the Acreage Reporting deadline for 2021 Hemp.  The deadline to report 2021 hemp is July 31, 2021.

USDA announces changes to hemp crop insurance (Successful Farming)
Today the USDA announced the expansion of the pilot Multi-Peril Crop Insurance plan for hemp. Expansion and other changes to the plan will be effective in the 2021 crop year.
